I have recently returned from a wonderful four night trip to Ischia, a beautiful island situated in the Gulf of Naples. Ischia is a volcanic island which is abundant with picturesque towns, stunning beaches, gardens, volcanic hot springs, vineyards and history. The island itself has been the backdrop to many a Hollywood blockbusters including the Talented Mr. Ripley.
In as little as three hours you can be in the beautiful city of Naples flying from Leeds Bradford Airport, now offering two flights a week. Once you have landed you then take a quick 45 minute hydrofoil journey across to Ischia port.
Ahead of my trip I was excited to sample the local delicacies of the island and I wasn’t left disappointed. During my stay I tasted delicious freshly made pasta, pizza and savoured some of the island’s wine and wonderful cocktails.
Discovering the luscious Island of Ischia
The first part of my island tour included a stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Terme. This 5 star hotel was very traditional and harked back to the glamourous era of travel with impeccable service. The hotel’s exclusive restaurant, The Belvedere, served a variety of locally caught fish and fresh vegetables from the hotel’s garden. It was a pleasure to explore the grounds, relax by the pool and private beach.
As my tour of the enrapturing island continued I moved on to stay at the Garden Villas. This tranquil and relaxing 4 star resort boasts vast luscious gardens. The hotel’s beautiful spa facility allows you to restore your inner balance with nature and is worth a visit during your stay.
Visiting captivating Capri
The island of Ischia is captivating but my wanderlust was tingling so I decided to explore the exclusive nearby island of Capri. The infamous island only resides 45 minutes south east by hydrofoil from Ischia. The classic Italian Island was full of ‘la dolce vita’ charm with its cobbled streets, café culture and designer shopping.
Sampling the wonderful wines of Ischia
Ischia is renowned for its wine, producing both red and white varieties. During my stay I was lucky enough to visit one of their enchanting vineyards where I was able to enjoy a tasting menu and match different wines to my meal. The evening was relaxing as I learnt about the wine and discovered the vineyard. As I discovered the vineyard more I visited areas where they hold fabulous functions such as weddings.
Ischia and Italy beyond
Leaving the islands only fired my desire to discover more of Italy. The food, wine, culture and lifestyle of the islands are sublime. If you feel inspired for a slice of ‘la dolce vita life’, why not come into our Ilkley store? We can talk about the hotels I visited, my travels and how we can make those Italian dreams become a reality.
